Being able to steer an auto is always an essential part of the automotive experience. Consumer Reports suggests that the Sonata recall that has emerged of late was based on a noted lack of such control. Around 140,000 Hyundai Sonatas are being recalled beginning in October due to issues with the steering column intermediate shaft. A dangerous lack of steering ability that comes from a connector joint problem is the culprit.
Joint connection problems prompted Sonata recall
Bad parts, botched construction or loose nuts could all contribute to the problem in Hyundai Sonatas made from December 11, 2009 via September 10, 2010. Those with Sonatas in question should go to their dealer for repair and power steering software update, all done at no cost to the consumer. These services can be performed free of charge, suggests Consumer Reports. If consumers have additional questions about the Hyundai recall, Hyundai’s customer service department can be reached at 800-633-5151.
Both Hyundai and Kia have experienced steering problems
The English-language version of the Chosun Ilbo newspaper just lately reported that complaints over steering in the Hyundai Sonata sedan and Kia Soul multipurpose car have sparked investigation by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Only one complaint was filed on the Soul, but that consumer posted a YouTube video, which proved to be viral. One element of the Chosun Ilbo report that is quite interesting is the article points out that some have alleged the U.S. may be intentionally targeting Hyundai after Toyota’s trouble, since “it is really unusual for a massive investigation to be triggered by a single complaint”.
United States, the Sonata and Kia Soul are the flagship models of the joint automaker Hyundai-Kia. In the first seven months of 2010, 108,000 Sonatas were sold in America, accounting for 46 percent of total sales by the car manufacturer within the nation. According to Chosun Ilbo, exports of the Kia Soul in July totaled 8,000. Sales projections indicate that over 10,000 Souls will be sold per month in the second half of 2010.
