We all know that changing oil is very important. We know we need to do it regularly. In general, the older the car, the more often the motor oil should be changed. However, what do the numbers and letters listed on that container of engine oil really mean? The Engine Oil Bible, Car Deal Expert can help you. You are able to determine which oil needs to go inside your car.
Why your engine oil needs regular changing
Engine oil helps your car’s engine. It makes certain the engine is well lubricated. Friction build up is prevented with lubrication. This also keeps heat from transferring from the combustion cycle because of parts grinding together. The combustion process gives off chemicals and oxidation. The oil helps keep this clean and minimized. Throughout this process, it becomes dirty and thins out, hence the need for regular replacement.
What is the importance of the numbers and letters
Consumer motor oil is divided into three types: fully synthetic, semi-synthetic and mineral (standard) oil. Take 5W-30 motor oil, for instance. It is a semi-synthetic blend. The number before the W is the “cold” viscosity rating of the oil, while the latter number is the “hot” viscosity rating. W means “winter” which means a lower cold number is wanted to keep the engine running better in the cold.
Mineral oil costs the least
Standard motor oil is effective at guarding your engine. It’s also cheaper than semi-synthetic and synthetic oil. However, it must be changed more often, as it becomes dirty and thins out more quickly.
Semi-synthetic comes from standard
There isn’t much of a difference between semi-synthetic and standard oil. They are related. The Engine Oil Bible explains that semi-synthetic oils are made with polyalpholifins. It comes directly from “the purest part of the mineral oil refraction process.” .
Synthetic used with heavy gearboxes
Automobiles with intensely loaded gearboxes need pure synthetic oil which is also called polyalkyleneglycols. It is for high performance. Finely tuned via molecular recombination, fully synthetic motor oil can’t mix with other oils. For consumers who wish to use pure synthetic oil in their engines, said engines should be newer and in fully working order – clean with no leaks. Pure synthetics tend to break off engine deposits and leave them floating in the engine. The Engine Oil Bible suggests that once you go synthetic, you do not go back to mineral unless you know what you are doing.
Go with quality, lightweight oil
Your environment will determine your engine oil. Make sure your engine oil is right. Newer engines are different than older ones. Those ones do better with thin oil. Consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual and ask for the opinion of a trusted mechanic.
